Make a better world

As a subsidiary of MABEWO AG, MABEWO BLUE PLANET follows the model of its holding company. Our commitment to resource and environmental protection and the further development of renewable energies is our contribution to a better and more sustainable world. We take our respobsibility to actively help and shape the energy transition very seriously.

We carefully select our investment projects and evaluate them in advance for profitability, safety, social responsibility and sustainability. In addition to generating renewable electricity, our projects make a valuable contribution to reducing CO2 emissions.

Example landfill degassing

Due to biological reactions, landfills produce gas, which causes an impairment of the immediate surroundings. Biogas is also one of the end products of the biological treatment used in our waste management centers.

Landfill gas is a biogenic gas that is produced by the biological degradation of organic material in landfills. The main components of landfill gas are methane and carbon dioxide. The greenhouse gas effect of methane emissions is 25 times higher than of carbon dioxide. Landfills even rank third among the main methane-emitting climate polluters. Without appropriate security measures, large amounts of landfill residual gases can still be released into the atmosphere, even decades after their shutdown.

If it is now possible to keep track of the occurring landfill gas, it can be used to generate (thermal or electrical) energy from it. Therefore, landfill gas is relevant for climate protection in two ways. The collection and generation of electricity from landfill gas has considerable potential to counteract climate changes in the field of waste management.

The use of biogas at existing landfills and in the waste management centers is one of the main points of our activity. Our competent project partners on site carry out the relevant preliminary investigations and forecast calculations. They set up and operate the collection network and the recycling systems and take care of feed-in agreements and the maintenance of the systems.

Example biogas plants

The treatment of biowaste and green waste directly causes greenhouse gas emissions in the form of methane and / or nitrous oxide (N2O). Depending on the type of plant, whether it is open or closed composting or fermentation- / biogas plants, the methane or nitrous oxide emissions vary considerably. Overall, greenhouse gas emissions amounting to millions of CO2 equivalents are calculated for the biowaste and green waste collected separately in landfills. An average of 80 kilograms of CO2 equivalents per ton of organic waste and 72 kilograms of CO2 equivalents per ton of green waste are estimated.

The amount of electricity or heat obtained in biogas plants as well as the substitution of fertilizers and peat or substrates achieved with the compost (fermentation residues) results in avoiding greenhouse gas emissions (especially CO2). According to a current study on the potential for climate protection in waste management, an average avoidance effect in the order of 73 kilograms per ton of organic waste or 58 kilograms per ton of green waste can be assumed. Important factors include the percentage of organic and green waste and the optimized material flow separation, in which green waste should also be increasingly used for energy generation.

The future

The further development of waste management towards a resource-friendly circular economy is the goal of numerous political initiatives. It is also part of the sustainability strategy for countries where MABEWO BLUE PLANET and its project companies are working in. The European Waste Framework Directive, which is currently being implemented in national law by amending the German Recycling and Waste Management Act, also aims to strengthen waste avoidance and recycling and thus achievable improvements in environmental, climate and resource protection. The main aim is to strengthen material recycling and the most efficient energetic use of non-materially recycled waste.

As an investing company, MABEWO BLUE PLANET is indirectly or directly involved in the activities of the project companies. By applying specific technologies in the field of renewable energies, MABEWO BLUE PLANET enables access to new locations and projects, for example in Belarus, Georgia or Russia. This includes climate protection and the expansion of renewable energies in markets that have hardly been developed in the past. The sustainably generated electricity is obtained from solar energy, small hydropower, landfill degassing or in biogas plants and fed into the public grid.
